The Jedi Sk8ter Boy

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

I’m always proud to show off my boys and AJ is no exception.  He actually turned 6 a couple months ago, but between my procrastination, a “themed” shoot that turned out to be a bit more involved than I thought it would be, and our sudden trip to Memphis for a family emergency – his photo shoot was broken into two parts and stretched over 2 months.

Last year, I did a Knight-themed photo shoot with my oldest son and of course AJ wouldn’t let HIS birthday slide without an equally cool photoshoot.

“well, what do you want to do?” I asked him (whilst day-dreaming about fantasy type scenarios: think “little boy blue” or “peter pan”)

“STAR WARS!” he replied.

{silence}

“uh….how about Peter Pan?”

“No way mom. STAR.WARS.”

So I was stumped. And I thought about it for a looonnnggg time.  How do you do a Star Wars Themed Shoot without it looking like a bad Halloween catalog??  I pondered all the Star Wars “scenes”…Jabba the Hut?  The Ewoks in the Forest?   Tattooine?    EUREKA!  Thanks to the fact that Albany happens to have some random sand dunes out in the middle of nowhere…..Tattoine would work out just fine, thank you very much.  So out we went, me and Annakin Skywalker…. and that night I hunched over my computer screen and did my best to make the planet Tattoine come to life from SW Georgia.  Thank goodness for  Twitter and my tweeps who helped me nail down the details….”Hey friends, does Tattooine have 2 or 3 moons?” LOL

This is my favorite from the Jedi series….I”ll probably print it as a large poster for his room. :)

For the hard-core Star Wars fans who are looking at the body paint skeptically, it’s actually Annakin Skywalker’s tattoo from Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

I had to just throw this one in there – Annakin Skywalker and my assistant Darth Vader. :)

I LOVE being a mama to boys. :)

Themes are fun, but I also like to have some “regular” birthday portraits too (and so do the grandma’s), so just this week we went out and finally finished up his birthday pictures. :)

Just a little preview of something that my son and I worked on this week.  He just turned 6 a few weeks ago and since themed photo shoots are becoming a birthday tradition with my boys, we brainstormed for something that would suit him and his current interests.

More to come. :)

Maya Turns One

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

I was so excited to photograph this sweet lil’ babe for her 1st birthday.  Her mom (my client turned friend) wanted to do a cupcake smash for Maya’s birthday pictures and I’d never done one before so we decided to give it a go! We were pushin’ her to the limits of her tolerance level as we neared (then passed) her naptime, but she put up with me and my camera in her face like a champ. :)   Enjoy your Sneak Peek!

I laughed and laughed as Maya was handed her cupcake.  You can almost imagine what she’s thinking……

“Hey, what’s this?”

“You’re gonna let me EAT this???”

“She IS, crazy photographer lady. She IS going to let me eat it!”

The Downs Family | Albany, GA Family Photography

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Last month I received a call from someone who was wanting to schedule a family appointment with me.  She mentioned in her message that she saw my work on the blog and her caller ID was from Michigan.  At the time, I figured that she had stumbled across my blog and had seen some of my work from when I went home to Michigan over the summer and had mistakenly thought that I was located in Michigan.  I began to think of some Grand Rapids photographers that I knew that I could refer her to and planned on calling her back the next day.  But before I could, she called me again, said that they REALLY wanted to get a family portrait session done and then at the end she apologized for her long-distance Michigan phone number because they had just moved to the area. Say WHAT?  Small world, huh?

So I called her back and told her my incorrect assumptions, told her I was from Michigan too, blah, blah, blah and it turns out that we practically live parallel lives. :)   They’re from Michigan, they moved to Florida (we did too), then found themselves in the middle-of-nowhere Georgia (hello?!) and oh, they also have 3 kids of one gender.  Who happen to be the same ages (more or less) as mine.  Oh, and Mandy dabbles in photography. Weird, huh?!

I was going to tell Mandy that I didn’t have any more appointments left for 2009 (because I didn’t) but after talking with her for about 20 minutes I was so intriqued that I wanted to meet her and her family so I squeezed her in on a Sunday morning.

Mandy, Dan – I so enjoyed meeting you guys and your fantastic children.  And I think I might like to set up some arranged marriages between my boys and your girls. :)   Just FYI.

Enjoy your Sneak Peek!

I love, LOVE this big old tree on this property.  It’s one of my favorite places to be.

This is Anna.

She loves to read.

And Lucy.  She’s a rockstar.

And adorable little Maya.

I love it when my clients are people who I would hang out with in real life. :)

Dan & Mandy are supa fun.  And a cute couple too.

Don’t forget to leave ‘em comments so they can get free prints!

And stay tuned to the blog for our Holiday Giveaway information that’s coming at you THIS WEEK (I promise!)
