Guide to Dressing Your Family for Your Photoshoot | Albany GA Family Photography

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Hey everyone… Casey here with another Style Guide.

Hopefully this post will help with one of our most common FAQ’s. “We want to take family pictures… but we have no idea what to wear?!?!”

The idea of getting dressed for your family photoshoot should not be daunting. After all, we want your pictures to reflect YOUR family & YOUR unique style! So I’ve put together a simple guide to creating cohesive outfits for your family so that you don’t end up looking like this:

NOTE: Just because every American owns a pair of jeans & a white Oxford shirt does not mean that it should be worn for every family portrait… ever!

*Thanks to our friends at Awkward Family Photos for showing us what NOT to do!

So let’s get started:

1. Each member of your family should be dressed according to their personal style.

[Don't try to force your kids or your husband to look alike... trust us- EVERYONE will be happier if they feel comfortable!]

2. Throw the word MATCH out the window… instead think COORDINATE!

[This is a classic fashion mistake...things needn't match precisely, they just need to compliment the overall outfit.]

3. Wear things that are comfortable, functional, & fun!

[Pull out those vintage stilettos, the retro band tee, or that designer belt you've been saving for the right moment] [But remember: comfort... if you can't walk, stand, sit & even jump in it... you might want to reconsider]

So let’s see some clothes!

I suggest picking a unifying element around which you will build your family’s wardrobe.

For instance, plaid:

GOTCHA!!!!

Just kidding… now seriously how about a unifying color:

Let’s go with green.

[Outfits created from The GAP & American Eagle]

We LOVE layers & accessories.

These outfits use navy blue as a unifier while allowing each person some individual colors. Also, notice that slightly preppier look of these outfits. Depending on the location of your session you may want to theme your clothes to fit the environment.

[Outfits created from Boden]

Maybe your family is edgy… you might want something with a more urban feel. While these outfits contain a lot of black, white, & gray… splashes of color (like red) can be eye catching & cool!

[Outfits created from Old Navy]

If I could offer one piece of advice I would say: “Don’t OVERTHINK!” Remember these pictures are of YOU. They’ll be displayed in YOUR HOME and seen by YOUR FAMILY & FRIENDS. Be natural, be comfortable, & HAVE FUN!

We can’t wait to meet your family…

Until next time. :)

What to Wear for Your ROCKSTAR Photoshoot…

Friday, March 6th, 2009

Hey everybody…
Casey here with a special fashion edition for our future ROCKSTARS.

As resident style guru for Tammi Nowack Photography I thought I would take a chance to answer one of our frequently asked questions:
What should I wear for my photoshoot???

We hear this question A LOT, but dressing for your photoshoot doesn’t have to be a challenge.
I’ve put together a few collages of some of our favorite fashion looks from past sessions (They’re grouped by trend). These looks contain fashion elements that translate really well on camera.

Textures add interest and detail to your photos.

Keep in mind that bolder textures will show up better than small textures.

Notice Again: BOLD…

Patterns look really cool on camera and can help you to bring multiple colors into your look.

However, monochromatic patterns (like Black and White) and small patterns can sometimes be distracting or not show up at all.

Nothing makes a full color image POP like a splash of bright & bold color.

Color can be added through layering or with accessories. Also, having a little color in your images makes Tammi’s signature vintage look really eye catching!

Quite possibly our favorite trend… accessories.

Using accessories is a way for you to really bring out your personality. Scarves, Hats, Jackets, Jewelry, and even really great shoes can be highlighted in an image.

Finally Girls… when in doubt… bring along your little black dress.

Every girl has one and it’s probably one of your favorite things to wear…so why not be photographed in something you LOVE?!

So… you see…

It’s really easy- just pick out a few things from your wardrobe that really are YOU.

Make sure you have a dash of color & a few accessories… and you’re all set.

Of course we will be glad to consult with you about any fashion questions but I hope this little post will help you out as Senior Pic season approaches.
